ASHBURN, VA — While New Year’s Day is often a day to recover from the previous night's festivities, if you do plan to head out, it’s good to know how the holiday may affect the availability of services in Ashburn.

New Year’s Day and New Year's Eve are two of the holidays that usually affect the hours of government offices, libraries, public transportation, garbage pickup and other services in Ashburn.

To help you plan, here’s a roundup of what’s open and what’s closed on New Year's Eve and New Year’s Day in our area:

  • Loudoun County government offices: Closed on Friday, Dec. 31 and Saturday, Jan. 1.
  • Loudoun County courts: Courts will be closed on Friday, Dec. 31 and Saturday, Jan. 1.
  • Loudoun County libraries: Close at 5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 31. Closed on Saturday, Jan. 1.
  • Loudoun County transit: Buses will not run on Saturday, Jan. 1.
  • Post offices: Some locations may have limited hours on Dec. 31. Check with your local post office. All post offices are closed on Jan. 1.
  • Metro: On Dec. 31, Metrobus operates on a Saturday schedule, while Metrorail operates on a weekday schedule. Both services operate on a Sunday schedule on Jan. 1. Visit www.wmata.com/schedules/timetables for more information.
  • Department of Motor Vehicles: All DMV customer service centers will be closed Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.
