1. Bedford County Schools weighs additional closing as part of redistricting (wdbj7.com) — Bedford County Public Schools is weighing four redistricting plans that could close Stewartsville Elementary and possibly Otter River, Big Island, or Bedford Primary, shifting many students' school assignments and bus routes. Parents from across the county, including Big Island and Goodview, are pressing for clearer data and more time, and several town halls in Forest, Moneta, and other local spots are scheduled through early October for public input.
2. Supervisors borrow money (pmg-va.com) — Bedford County supervisors have approved borrowing $26 million to build a new social services building and expand the Sheriff's Office, choosing long-term debt over using county reserves. They also backed a grant application for interior drones to aid searches and ratified leasing Moose Lodge athletic facilities for Parks and Rec programs, potentially expanding local recreation options.
3. Being a military leader (pmg-va.com) — Cadets from Bedford County JROTC recently joined more than 100 ROTC and JROTC students at the National D-Day Memorial to hear Medal of Honor recipient Major Drew Dix discuss real-world military leadership. He shared combat experiences from Vietnam, stressed integrity, humility, and decisive decision-making, and highlighted what it truly means to lead others in difficult situations.
4. Obituary: Ramona Hopkins Dobbins, 75 (hintonnews.com) — Family and friends in Bedford are invited to remember Ramona Hopkins Dobbins, who was born in Bedford in 1951 and passed away earlier this week. Visitation will be held Saturday morning at Updike Funeral Home in Bedford, followed by an 11 a.m. graveside service at Greenwood Cemetery.
