Grown Here at Home: Kentland Farm Field Day returns for another year (wdbj7.com) — An upcoming Kentland Farm Field Day in Blacksburg on September 15 invites locals interested in agriculture to choose between livestock and horticulture tracks, with talks, demos, and optional tours. For $15, attendees get lunch, ice cream, door prizes, and expert-led sessions, but must register by September 8 through the Pulaski Extension Office.
2. Free training for childcare workers planned in New River Valley Sept 25 (wvtf.org) — Childcare workers from Blacksburg and the wider New River Valley can attend a free Virginia Tech-led symposium in town on September 25 focused on early education, Head Start changes, and classroom challenges. The event offers workshops, networking, and talks with pediatric specialists, and will also honor several Early Education Champions for their work with local children and families.
3. Blacksburg nonprofit is a finalist for an international award (wfirnews.com) — A Blacksburg-based nonprofit, Hope to Walk, is a finalist for the 2026 Dot-Org Impact Awards, guaranteeing at least $2,500 and a shot at a $50,000 grand prize. From its Blacksburg-made prosthetic legs, the group now supports clinics in several developing countries, dramatically expanding free care for amputees, many of whom lost limbs due to diabetes.
4. Hokies Baseball Q&A: Gehrig Ebel returns as volunteer assistant coach (hokiesports.com) — Virginia Tech baseball alum Gehrig Ebel is back in Blacksburg as the Hokies' volunteer assistant coach, hoping to build a long-term career on the same field where he starred. In a wide-ranging Q&A, he reflects on memorable NCAA Blacksburg Regional games, his growth under the coaching staff, and what makes Blacksburg's college-town atmosphere and fan support so special.
5. Halifax County authorities looking for Bedford County man last seen in August (wset.com) — Authorities are asking Blacksburg and New River Valley residents to watch for 55-year-old Bryan Kast of Goode, who has been missing since an August 4 visit to Halifax County. Kast drives a blue 2012 Nissan Maxima with Virginia plate UBK-4111, and anyone who's seen him or his car is urged to contact the Halifax County Sheriff's Office.
