Through the New River Home Trust land‑trust model, these houses stay permanently affordable while still letting buyers build equity, with local partners like Habitat and Community Housing Partners helping families put down long‑term roots.

2. Blacksburg speed cameras begin issuing fines in school zones (wsls.com) — If you drive through school zones at Blacksburg Middle or Gilbert Linkous Elementary, new speed cameras are now issuing $100 fines for going 11 mph or more over the limit during flashing-light hours. After a 30‑day warning period that flagged 1,300 potential violators, police say early enforcement is already slowing traffic and they'll keep analyzing data before adding any more cameras.

3. Missing Man from Goode, VA (nrvnews.com) — Authorities are searching for 55-year-old Bryan Kast, who has ties to Blacksburg and the New River Valley and hasn't been seen since early August after visiting Halifax County. He may be driving a blue 2012 Nissan Maxima with Virginia plates UBK-4111, and anyone in the Blacksburg area who's seen him or his car is urged to contact the Halifax County Sheriff's Office.

4. New River Conservancy nominated as AmeriCorps NCCC 'Partner of the Year' (montcova.com) — AmeriCorps' Grizzly 7 team recently completed hands-on conservation work in Blacksburg, including projects along Stroubles Creek and a new rain garden, while partnering with New River Conservancy. Their efforts helped clean up local waterways and earned NRC a nomination for AmeriCorps NCCC Partner of the Year, highlighting the impact of volunteers across the New River Valley.

5. Virginia Gas Prices: Cheapest and most expensive places to fill up - Sept. 9, 2026 (wsls.com) — Drivers in Blacksburg, Christiansburg, and Radford are now paying about $3.97 for regular gas and $5.89 for diesel, slightly above the Virginia average. Prices have climbed sharply over the past year, with statewide regular gas nearly a dollar higher and national diesel costs hitting record levels, so planning fill-ups carefully could save you money.
