1. Blacksburg launches refreshed community brand system (montcova.com) — Blacksburg is rolling out a new town-wide visual brand that highlights mountains, small-town warmth, college-town energy, and creative spirit, tying together Parks and Recreation, downtown groups, and The Local retail incubator. Residents will gradually see new logos and shared colors appear on town departments, business organizations, and tourism materials over the coming year.
2. Empty Bowls event to support hunger relief (montcova.com) — Blacksburg residents are invited to the YMCA at Virginia Tech's Empty Bowls fundraiser on Oct. 13 at The Y Center on North Main Street. Attendees can enjoy soups from local restaurants, live music, and a handmade ceramic bowl to take home, with all proceeds supporting Meals On Main and other YMCA food programs for children and families across the New River Valley.
3. Flock cameras remain in Blacksburg, officially out in Montgomery County (montcova.com) — Blacksburg and Virginia Tech are keeping their Flock license plate cameras, but adding tighter limits on how data is shared, while the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office is discontinuing the technology after a community review. For local residents, that means cameras will still monitor vehicles in town and on campus, even as county deputies step back until clearer statewide rules are in place.
4. Virginia Gas Prices: Cheapest and most expensive places to fill up - Oct. 6, 2026 (wsls.com) — Drivers in Blacksburg, Christiansburg, and Radford are paying about $4.13 for regular gas today, with midgrade, premium, and diesel also listed so you can compare before filling up. Prices are slightly down from last week statewide, and the report includes links to tools for finding the cheapest nearby stations as costs keep shifting.
5. Inaugural NRV Renaissance Festival debuts in Blacksburg (wfxrtv.com) — Blacksburg will host the first-ever NRV Renaissance Festival at Beliveau Farm Winery on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1, bringing medieval-style markets, sword fighting shows, falconry, and aerial performances. Organizers hope to create a new fall tradition for the New River Valley, with Virginia Tech and Radford volunteers helping and guests encouraged, though not required, to dress in historic or fantasy costumes.
