5 Lanes Of Capital Beltway Blocked Due To Multi-Vehicle Crash

A multi-vehicle crash closed five southbound lanes on Interstate 495 Monday afternoon in Fairfax County causing significant delays.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — A multi-vehicle crash caused significant delays of about 5 miles on southbound Interstate 495 around 3 p.m. on Monday, according to an alert from the Metropolitan Area Transportation Operations Coordination.

The five left southbound lanes of the Outer Loop were blocked past Exit 54/Braddock Road (VA-620), with one lane of traffic getting by.

Although the vehicles involved in the crash were removed by around 3:15 p.m. and all lanes reopened, traffic remained heavy as the backup continued to clear.

No information was immediately available about the cause of the crash or whether anyone was injured.

Despite the removal of the vehicles involved in the crash, significant delays remained as vehicles stuck in the 5-mile backup worked their way south. (VDOT)
