7 People Lose Home In West Springfield Fire

Damages to the home and a neighboring residence are estimated to be more than $193,000.

WEST SPRINGFIELD, VA—Seven residents are displaced after a severe fire at their West Springfield home Friday. No one was injured.

Firefighters were called to the 8800 block of Surveyors Place for a fire at a two-story, middle unit townhouse around 10:13 p.m. Friday. Crews located a fire in the rear and in the basement extending to the upper floors. Firefighters were able to quickly bring the blaze under control.

The seven residents were home at the time. Two of them noticed smoke coming from the back deck moments before the smoke alarm sounded, and another called 911. All safely evacuated before the fire department arrived.

Fire investigators determined the fire had ignited under the back deck due to an air conditioner malfunction. Damages are initially estimated to be $193,750, which includes $30,000 in damages to a neighboring townhouse. The residents have accepted Red Cross assistance.
