Burke Residents Lose Home After Heater Ignites Fire
The residents weren't home when a fire started in the basement of their Burke home.

BURKE, VA—Three people are displaced after a Burke home went up in flames Monday.
Around 2 p.m., firefighters responded to the townhouse fire in the 6500 block of Alexis Lane. Firefighters located the fire in the basement and quickly put it out. No injuries were reported.
The residents were not home at the time of the fire. A neighbor smelled smoke coming from the middle unit townhouse and called 911. The smoke alarms did not appear to be working when firefighters arrived on scene.

Fire investigators say the accidental fire started in the basement when objects close to a space heater caught fire. Damages are estimated to be $20,000. The displaced residents have declined Red Cross services.
Fairfax County Fire and Rescue offers the following reminders to residents about safely using space heaters:

- Use only appliances that automatically turn off if tipped over.
- Use only models that have been approved by a nationally recognized testing agency (UL or Factory Mutual).
- Keep combustible materials at least three feet away from space heaters.
- If using an electric model, make sure the cord is not frayed or worn.
- Do not use an extension cord with a portable heater.
- Keep children and pets away from portable heaters to prevent serious burns.
- Turn heaters off when you leave home or go to bed.
