Candle Starts Fire In West Springfield Home: Fire Department

No one was injured in a fire at a townhouse last week, according to Fairfax County Fire and Rescue.

WEST SPRINGFIELD, VA — An unattended candle was determined to be the cause of a townhouse fire in West Springfield on Friday, May 14, according to Fairfax County and Rescue.

Units had responded to the 6000 block of Selwood Place around 9:19 a.m. Fire was visible from the second floor of the two-story middle unit home. Two residents had been home when the fire occurred. One resident had discovered the fire in a bedroom, and both evacuated before calling 911. No one was injured.

Smoke alarms activated after the fire was found. Investigators confirmed the fire started in a bedroom by an unattended lit candle.

Damages were estimated to be $125,000. Three residents were displaced but declined Red Cross assistance.
