Taking place on Saturday, July 4, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, this free community event offers a patriotic, kid-friendly kickoff to this milestone in our nation's history.&nbsp; The event features interactive educational displays and hands-on activities designed to bring history to life for visitors of all ages. Guests can step back in time, grab a quill, and add their own names to a replica of the historic 1776 document. Free festive treats, including birthday cake and ice-cold lemonade will be served to guests throughout the afternoon. Attendees can also enter a prize drawing.&nbsp; The cornerstone of the celebration occurs at exactly noon with a live dramatic reading of the Declaration of Independence, honoring 250 years of American freedom, and the ringing of the school bell.&nbsp;

SOT's America 250 Season continues! Shakespeare Opera Theatre presents two unforgettable American Opera gems July 10-19 2026 at Hudson Hall in McLean, Virginia. Susannah Polk is a young woman whose beauty and independence make her stand out in her tightly-knit mountain community. When she’s accused of immoral behavior by the valley’s self-righteous elders, rumor quickly hardens into judgment. Even the well-meaning Reverend is torn between compassion and desire, creating turmoil that drives the drama to bitter tragedy.&nbsp; Carlisle Floyd’s score fuses Appalachian folk sounds with soaring lyricism, creating one of the most unforgettable American works of the 20th century.&nbsp; (Sung in English, run time of one hundred minutes&nbsp;with one intermission) Shakespeare Opera Theatre proudly partners with and is supported by The McLean Community Foundation, &nbsp;The Ross Roberts Fund for the Arts of The Community Foundartion of Northern Virginia, The Fairfax County 250 Fund, The Dimick Foundation, The Johnston Family Foundation,&nbsp;Arts Fairfax and The Virginia Commission for the Arts. Founded in 2015, SOT's unique blend of intimate and immersive classical theater and opera has earned accolades from The Washington Post, The French publication ODB, Operawire, Opera Today, DC Theatre Arts, Theater Washington, Shakespearances, OperaGene, and&nbsp;WTOP radio. Doors open 30 minutes before each performance for themed food and drink at our cabaret table seating.
