Fairfax Inmate Dies After Medical Emergency In Custody

The inmate had been taken to the hospital and later suffered a medical emergency, police say.

FAIRFAX, VA—Fairfax County Police are investigating the death of an inmate Thursday in custody of the sheriff's office.

According to the sheriff's office, the inmate had been taken to the hospital on Sept. 6 from the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center infirmary. The inmate suffered a medical emergency on Thursday, Sept. 13. Hospital staff performed CPR but were unsuccessful. Haywood Summers, 68, was pronounced dead at 6:03 p.m.

Summers had been in sheriff's custody for two days before going to the hospital.

Fairfax County Police routinely investigate sheriff's office in-custody deaths. Initial investigations show no signs of foul play.

The medical examiner will perform an autopsy, while police and the sheriff's office are working together to document the incident.
