Greenspring’s Resident Newsletter Wins APEX Award for Excellence
Springfield, Va. retirement community's newspaper, The Villager, wins for third consecutive year

Greenspring, an Erickson Living retirement community, today announced its resident-produced newspaper, The Villager, has been awarded its third APEX award. The monthly newsletter also took home the award in 2016 and 2017.
Since September 2000, community members at Greenspring have produced the 16-20 page publication, which highlights life at the vibrant campus. Known as the “voice of the Greenspring residents,” the paper keeps residents up-to-date on all community activities with both a print and digital edition.
In January 2018, after five years and 60 issues, longtime Co-Editors Kathleen Henry and Kay McCurdy handed over the reins of the newspaper to longtime writer Carolyn Nagler, now Editor, and Ernie Carpenter, Assistant Editor.

“Kathleen Henry and I are absolutely delighted that The Villager has received an APEX Award for each of the past three years,” said Kay McCurdy. “This tradition of quality is continuing under new leadership with Carolyn Nagler and Ernie Carpenter, the current editors. We four agree: The Villager is the work of dozens of resident writers, photographers, and reviewers, and the Award of Excellence belongs to them all.”
“We couldn’t be more proud to see our residents’ hard work recognized in this way,” said Chandra Kumar, Executive Director at Greenspring. “The Villager is a vital part of keeping our community informed and connected. I’m constantly impressed to see how, even though they may technically be retired, our residents continue to do some of the best work of their lives right here at Greenspring. It is truly inspiring.”
