Ice Cream Instead of Traffic Tickets From Halifax Police

HALIFAX, VA — Police in Halifax have spent the past several days randomly pulling over drivers to. . .give them an ice cream cone.

In a now-gone-viral video posted to the department's Facebook page, officer Brian Warren pulls over a driver and asks her, "Ma'am are you aware of vehicle code 1-7-3-9?"

She says she's unaware of such a code.

"Well," Warren replies, "it's actually against the law to drive on a hot day without an ice cream cone."

The woman and her passenger break into laughter, as the smiling Warren hands them pre-packaged ice cream cones.

Halifax police chief Kevin Lands came up with the idea, in part, to improve relations and ease tensions between cops and their constituents during this summer of violence against police and, in some cases, by police.

He said he and his officers have pulled the prank more than 20 times.
