Lake Braddock Finishes Tenth, Injured Cory Smith Places Second In Northern Region Wrestling Championships
Three Lake Braddock Wrestlers place in top 5 in Saturday's Regional Championships
Lake Braddock finished tenth with a score of 54.50 in Saturday’s Northern Region Wrestling Championships at Fairfax High School.
Lake Braddock was without the services of Cory Smith, who suffered a leg injury during Friday night’s portion of the championship. The injury prevented him from competing in today’s events. Smith displayed perhaps the championship’s best overall performance in his thrilling come-from-behind overtime victory Friday, which gained him the praise of many, including his head coach,
“Cory, last night, in the semi-final, probably wrestled the best match of his life. On one leg, kind of hobbling around, down five to nothing, and comes back to tie it and goes to overtime and win it, still on one leg, showed a tremendous amount of heart and integrity. It was awesome to see the young man go out there and do that,” said Lake Braddock head coach Scott Matheny when asked about Davis’s performance.

Smith, who attended Saturday’s events on crutches, watched as two of his teammates turned in great performances. Rory Renzi (135 lb.) finished third in his bracket, while Jake Sage (140 lb.) placed fourth in his.
“Jake Sage and Rory Renzi really wrestled well…made sure they got into the state tournament and will hopefully get the best seed they can get. Rory really just dominated his way back,” remarked Matheny.
