WEST SPRINGFIELD, VA — One person was rescued from a balcony when a fire broke out in West Springfield Thursday morning.

The fire happened at a garden-style apartment building in the 5800 block of Royal Ridge Drive. Two people were home when the fire broke out around 10:51 a.m. One escaped outside, while the other went to the balcony.

Crews found smoke showing on the third floor from the rear and rescued the resident using a fire truck ladder. Due to the steep grade, the resident was protected in place until it was safe to evacuate from the apartment unit. One person was taken to the hospital for a check-up, and there were no firefighter injuries. After the fire was out, crews searched other units to ensure residents were safe.
