Today's riddle: Why do fish live in salt water? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Fall e-Waste Registration is Now OPEN (charlottesville.gov) — Charlottesville and Albemarle-area residents can now register for a free e-waste drop-off day on September 12 at the Ivy Solid Waste & Recycling Center, with strict limits on items and households. Rivanna Solid Waste Authority is also rolling out multiple no-cost collection days this fall for hazardous waste, furniture, appliances, and tires, all at local facilities serving Charlottesville.
2. Wawa shooting suspect in CPD custody (cvillerightnow.com) — Charlottesville police say the suspect in the August 6 Wawa shooting on 5th Street Station Parkway has turned himself in and is now in custody. Three people were injured but survived after officers quickly applied tourniquets at the scene. The police chief credits growing community cooperation for more suspects choosing to surrender peacefully.
3. A look at data centers planned in the Charlottesville area (c-ville.com) — Charlottesville currently has only smaller, UVA-run data centers, with none of the massive hyperscale facilities seen elsewhere in Virginia, and none planned in Albemarle. A major new UVA Fontaine Data Center is slated to bid later this year, while nearby Louisa County hosts huge EdgeCore and Amazon projects. Experts urge communities to use zoning and transparency to manage environmental and cost impacts.
4. UVA study explores the role of AI in special education (29news.com) — UVA researchers in Charlottesville are testing how tools like ChatGPT can help special education teachers write better IEP goals and free up time for students. The study found AI-generated goals matched those of experienced teachers, prompting questions about training, safeguards, and how Albemarle County schools and others should responsibly integrate AI into classrooms without replacing educators' expertise.
5. UVA Health launches first robotic heart surgery program in Virginia (29news.com) — Cardiac patients in Charlottesville may soon face smaller incisions and faster recoveries as UVA Health launches Virginia's first dedicated robotic heart surgery program. Surgeons recently completed a robotic mitral valve repair, sending the patient home the next day. The team plans to expand the technology's use, potentially opening advanced, less-invasive options to more local heart patients.
