📰 News we're reading

1. Chesapeake to establish Hampton Roads' first animal cruelty registry (pilotonline.com) — Chesapeake is creating Hampton Roads' first public registry of felony animal cruelty offenders, giving residents and shelters a new tool to keep pets away from known abusers. The online database, expected by fall, will list past felony convictions back to 2009 and allow petitions for removal after 15 years without new felonies. City leaders may also seek to add misdemeanor cases through state legislation.

2. Time to Uplift Women at The Annual Bra Ha Ha on Coast Live (wtkr.com) — Chesapeake will host the Annual Bra Ha Ha 5K at the Jennings Outpatient Center on Saturday, September 12, 2026, giving locals a chance to support breast cancer patients and survivors close to home. Residents can run or walk the race, design a creative bra for the challenge, or attend the October 2 awards show and auction featuring a diamond-necklace bra.

3. Chesapeake native Lauren Coughlin clinches spot on Solheim Cup team (pilotonline.com) — Chesapeake native Lauren Coughlin has officially locked in her place on the 2026 U.S. Solheim Cup golf team after a strong finish at the Portland Classic. Her selection puts a local face on one of women's golf's biggest international stages, while the rest of the roundup touches on college football logistics in Norfolk and several Virginia college sports storylines.

4. DEQ study warns of groundwater limits (suffolknewsherald.com) — State regulators say the aquifer under Chesapeake and neighboring localities has very limited capacity for new large groundwater users, which could constrain big data centers or other heavy industry. A DEQ test well modeled in Chesapeake showed only a fraction of a major user's demand could be permitted, with impacts stretching dozens of miles, a warning Suffolk and the wider region must weigh in future growth plans.
