Updated: Female Jogger Sexually Assaulted on E. Del Ray Avenue

1:40 p.m. update — The sexual assualt of a female jogger occurred at 6 a.m. Monday morning in the 200 block of E. Del Ray Avenue, according to a release from the Alexandria Police Department.

The unnamed female jogger was grabbed from behind and was inappropriately touched. The victim then screamed and was pushed to the ground by the suspect, who fled on foot.

The male suspect, who is described as being of unknown race, was last seen running toward Mt. Vernon Avenue. He was wearing a black puffy jacket and a black skull cap with dark pants. 

Anyone with information about this incident or who might have been in the area is urged to contact Detective Kevin Thomas at 703-746-6273 or the Criminal Investigations Section at 703-746-6711. Witnesses can remain anonymous.

The APD reminds joggers to run in well-lit areas and without headphones. The APD suggests running with a cell phone or with a partner and to let a friend or family member know what route you plan on taking.

A female jogger was sexually assaulted early Monday morning in the 200 block of E. Del Ray Avenue.

Alexandria Police Capt. Diane Gittins announced at the Del Ray Business Association luncheon Monday afternoon that the jogger was “grabbed from behind and thrown to the ground” by a male suspect.

Gittins said the victim was “OK, but shaken up, obviously.”

At the moment, the police don’t have much of a description of the suspect other than that he was wearing a puffy jacket.

Gittins said the police will increase their presence in the area and that the neighborhood was canvassed shortly after the incident was reported.

The Alexandria Police Department is expected to issue a release on the incident later in the day.
