No Witnesses to Cash Grab at Eclectic Nature

More than $100 lifted from register at gift and garden center on Mt. Vernon Avenue

More than $100 was lifted from the cash register at on Mt. Vernon Avenue on Thursday afternoon, according to shopkeeper Terry Mahoney.

The burglary happened sometime between 4 and 5 p.m. Mahoney said she noticed something was askew after walking into the store following some time spent in the yard next to the store watering plants.

“The register was buzzing and the drawer was open,” she said.

Mahoney said she didn't see anyone enter the store while she was in the yard. She helped two female customers during the day, one of which is a regular.

“There were no witnesses,” Mahoney said. “I went over and asked the guys at and they said they hadn’t seen anything.”

Mahoney called the non-emergency number of the Alexandria Police Department, which sent an officer to the scene shortly before 6 p.m.

An APD spokesperson had no comment on the incident until more information was available.

Mahoney said storeowner Christy Beal schedules just one employee to manage the place in the summer because “there’s really no need to pay for more” during the slower season.

According to Mahoney, the store has never been the site of much crime. She said she believes jewelry has been lifted in the past.
