1. Single-Car Crash Leaves 2 Adults Dead, 2 Children Injured In Fairfax County (patch.com) — A deadly overnight crash on Route 123 in Fairfax County left two adults dead and two children hospitalized, including a 2-year-old with life-threatening injuries. Police say speed likely played a role and note only the 8-year-old was properly restrained, as they ask Fairfax-area residents for tips to aid the ongoing investigation.
2. When Should Schools Make Time for PD? What Educators—and Families—Think (edweek.org) — Fairfax County parents and school leaders are wrestling with how many early-release and professional development days should be built into next year’s calendar, after this year’s schedule left full five-day weeks relatively rare. The school board has already voted to cut elementary early-release days to eight and hold classes on Veterans Day, while still meeting teacher training needs.
3. Goal of 10K affordable units in reach, but success not guaranteed, Fairfax housing chief says (ffxnow.com) — Fairfax County leaders say they’re roughly halfway to their goal of creating 10,000 new affordable homes by 2034, but warn that funding and market conditions could still derail progress. At a recent Board of Supervisors housing committee meeting in Fairfax, officials debated how much money and commitment it will really take, and when they’ll present a concrete funding plan.
4. Fairfax City seeks to reduce waste, increase recycling with updated trash management plan (ffxnow.com) — Fairfax City just approved a 20-year waste management plan that could change how your trash, recycling, and even composting are handled, while also tackling rising disposal costs. The council also backed $11 million in sewer-related bonds tied to Fairfax County’s Noman M. Cole facility and briefly discussed future pay raises and accessory dwelling units in the city.
5. Lawsuits filed after Fairfax legislators' assault weapon ban signed by Spanberger (ffxnow.com) — Fairfax-area lawmakers spearheaded Virginia’s new assault-style weapons and high-capacity magazine ban, now facing immediate legal challenges from the Fairfax-based NRA in state and federal court. The law, effective July 1, 2026, restricts future sales while exempting existing firearms, and local delegates say it fulfills long-running gun safety efforts across Fairfax County communities.
