Residents and Staff Members Collaborate at Woodleigh Chase

Executive Director Melissa Robson and Resident Advisory Council Chair Eileen Gallagher promote open communication

This post was contributed by a community member.

At Woodleigh Chase, an Erickson Senior Living community in Fairfax, Va., residents have a true say in what happens on campus, thanks to the Resident Advisory Council (RAC).

The RAC works closely with community leaders to not only provide feedback from neighbors but also to collaborate on matters both large and small. From sharing compliments about the on-site restaurants to requesting more umbrellas for shade near the bocce courts, this open communication ensures that services and amenities reflect the needs of those who call Woodleigh Chase home.

To learn more about how this collaboration strengthens the community and supports residents, the Tribune sat down with Eileen Gallagher, RAC chair, and Executive Director Melissa Robson.

Tribune: How would you describe the relationship between the RAC and community leaders?

Eileen: Melissa [and her team] are very accessible. She's always receptive to anything you ask of her. She has a "can-do" attitude--if she can do it, she'll get it done!

Robson: We have a strong partnership with the RAC. We value open, straightforward communication and respect each other's perspectives. We put in the work to tackle challenging topics and situations. The Council also helps us share planned updates. Closing the loop with residents is critical, as it shows we're listening and willing to follow through.

Tribune: How often do the RAC and administration meet to discuss residents' ideas?

Eileen: I meet with Melissa once a week, and she meets with the Council monthly.

Robson: We also work together during quarterly general sessions. In addition to reviewing current feedback, we develop action plans based on the annual resident satisfaction survey.

Tribune: How do residents share their feedback?

Eileen: Residents can share their voices in a variety of ways, including written feedback via the My Erickson app or email. During our Town Hall and Coffee and Conversation sessions, we set aside dedicated time for residents' questions and thoughts.

Robson: Our partnership offers multiple ways for residents to share feedback and stay engaged in community happenings. Their feedback helps us find a path forward to enhance the resident experience at Woodleigh Chase. Our goal is to always say 'yes,' even if that means finding a middle ground.

Tribune: Can you share some positive changes that came directly from resident input?

Eileen: Yes! With the leadership team's assistance, we have addressed many requests in a short period of time. This includes everything from adding a car-washing station to installing new chairs in our theater.

Robson: Here is another great example: We have so many talented artists in the community, so we worked with our residents to launch a community art gallery for both resident and staff member artists.

In another case, we are piloting the Auracast system in our theater to assist residents with hearing loss. We are also installing acoustic panels in our Providence Restaurant and creating space to accommodate larger parties--using round tables instead of oblong tables--to support them further.

Tribune: What is the best part of your working relationship?

Robson: We see resident feedback as a gift because it allows us to continually improve. Their voices are welcomed and valued!

If we have a major decision or goals we're working toward, we will often go to the RAC first and work in collaboration with them because they really understand the resident perspective.

Eileen: Because of our partnership, the quality of life at Woodleigh Chase has improved in many ways, and the residents really appreciate it!
