Makers Union To Replace Matchbox At Fairfax's Mosaic District

FAIRFAX, VA — Makers Union plans to open its sixth restaurant this fall in Fairfax County's Mosaic District, replacing the matchbox restaurant that occupied the space for nearly 14 years.

The restaurant will open at 2911 District Ave., Suite 120, in the Merrifield area, according to Thompson Restaurants, the company behind both Makers Union and matchbox. The new location will seat nearly 290 people and include a bar, private dining rooms and a patio.

"After nearly 14 amazing years of matchbox in Mosaic District, we're bringing another great brand from the Thompson Restaurants portfolio to this neighborhood," Alex Berentzen, chief operating officer of Thompson Restaurants, said in a statement.

Matchbox Space Getting New Restaurant Concept

Berentzen said the company believes Makers Union fits with Mosaic District's mix of restaurants, entertainment, retail and public spaces.

"Makers Union is a natural fit for the neighborhood's energy, demographics and sense of community," Berentzen said. "The nearly 290-seat restaurant, complete with a lively bar, private dining rooms and patio, brings a fun, chef-driven experience that complements Mosaic's unique mix of dining and entertainment. We know it will feel right at home here."

The Mosaic restaurant will offer Makers Union's menu of classic dishes with contemporary twists as well as its cocktail program. The interior will feature crushed velvet banquettes, a large bar and other design elements associated with the restaurant concept.

Thompson Restaurants has not announced a specific opening date. Hours and additional menu details are expected to be released closer to the restaurant's opening this fall.

Makers Union is part of Thompson Restaurants, which operates more than 70 locations across 15 brands. Its other concepts include matchbox, Big Buns, Hen Quarter Prime, Milk & Honey, Wiseguy Pizza and Austin Grill.
