Slappey Brown Reports $8.2K Raised In Fairfax City Council Race

FAIRFAX CITY, VA — Fairfax City Council candidate Sandra Slappey Brown raised $8,173 in contributions through Aug. 31 and supplemented her campaign with $3,450 in loans, according to campaign finance reports filed with the Virginia Department of Elections.

Slappey Brown's campaign entered September with $4,142.56 in cash on hand after spending $6,030.44 since the campaign began. The latest filing lists $3,450 in outstanding debt, including a $2,000 loan Slappey Brown made to her campaign in August.

Slappey Brown is running as an independent for one of the six seats on the Fairfax City Council in the November election. Her campaign committee, Sandra Slappey Brown for Fairfax, was established in January.

Campaign Raises Most Of Its Money In Spring

Slappey Brown reported $50 in contributions and a $1,000 loan during the first reporting period of the year. The campaign spent $330 and finished March with $720 available.

Fundraising picked up significantly from April through June, when the campaign reported $4,685 in contributions and another $450 in loans. Of the contributions, $2,218 came from itemized cash donations, $2,067 from smaller contributions and $400 from an in-kind contribution.

Among the itemized donors during that period were Anne Akers-Smith, Lisa Barnard and Richard Dickman, who each contributed $250. Sally Spero gave $218, while Hamilton John, Barbara Sims and Lisa Taylor each contributed $200, and Michael Fabio contributed $150. Laura Stokes, the former chair of the City of Fairfax Democratic Committee, also contributed $200 to slappey Brown's campaign.

Mackenzie's Tunes & Tonics in Fairfax provided $400 worth of food for a campaign party as an in-kind contribution.

The campaign reported another $925 in contributions from July 1-23. Of that amount, $900 was an in-kind contribution from Fairfax resident Deb Smith for graphic design services, with the remaining $25 reported as a smaller contribution.

Latest Report Shows $1,063 In Contributions

From July 24 through Aug. 31, Slappey Brown reported $1,063 in contributions. That included $855 in itemized contributions and $208 in smaller donations.

Arthur Hamerschlag gave $275, the largest cash contribution listed during the latest reporting period. Chantal Deflumeri and former City Council Member. Janice Miller each contributed $200.

Smith made two $90 contributions during the period, bringing her cumulative contributions to the campaign to $1,180. That cumulative amount includes the $900 in-kind graphic design contribution reported earlier in July.

Slappey Brown also loaned her campaign $2,000 on Aug. 19. Combined with earlier loans, the campaign reported a $3,450 loan balance at the end of August.

The campaign spent $1,457.32 during the latest reporting period. Its largest expenses included $763.20 to PrintersMark Inc. for walk cards and $627.37 to Printing Ideas for flyers. It also spent $52.22 on campaign shirts and reported several ActBlue processing fees.

Across the four reports covering the campaign through Aug. 31, Slappey Brown reported $8,173 in contributions. The campaign also received $3,450 in loans, bringing total election-cycle receipts to $10,173. It reported $6,030.44 in total disbursements, $4,142.56 in cash on hand and $3,450 in unpaid debt at the end of August.
