FAIRFAX CITY, VA — Kelly O'Brien reported $8,417.21 in campaign contributions through Aug. 31 in her bid for Fairfax City Council, according to four campaign finance reports reviewed by Patch.
O'Brien is running as an independent for one of the six council seats on the Nov. 3 ballot. Her candidate committee, Kelly O'Brien for Fairfax, began reporting activity in January. O'Brien is also vice chair of the city's Parks and Recreation Advisory Board.
Her campaign reported $810 in contributions from Jan. 2 through March 31, $4,340.35 from April through June, $361.82 from July 1-23 and $2,905.04 from July 24 through Aug. 31.
That last reporting period was her second-largest fundraising period of the year, trailing only the $4,340.35 reported during the second quarter.
Of O'Brien's $8,417.21 contribution total, $6,380.52 came in cash contributions and $2,036.69 consisted of donated goods and services.
Her latest report included $1,505.04 in cash contributions and $1,400 in in-kind contributions.
The largest contribution reported during that period was a $750 in-kind donation from Fairfax-based Lumik LLC for website design. Anne Chan contributed $650 in campaign photography services.
William Fields contributed $526.50 in cash, the largest individual cash contribution in the July 24-Aug. 31 report. Other contributions included $290.25 from Arthur Hamerschlag, $150 from Michael Fabio and $105.75 each from Ron Frerker, Jason Hansen and Stacey Hardy-Chandler.
Hardy-Chandler currently serves on the Fairfax City Council.
Earlier in the year, O'Brien reported a $527.47 contribution from Dreamstay Getaways, $500 from Rick Dickson and a $450 in-kind campaign photography contribution from Jeremy Norwood.
Former Fairfax City Councilmember Janice Miller contributed $250 during the first quarter.
Fairfax City Mayor Catherine Read contributed $105.75 in April. Read's term as mayor runs through Dec. 31.
O'Brien's campaign reported $7,996.55 in cumulative spending through Aug. 31.
Her largest spending period was July 24-Aug. 31, when the campaign reported $3,112.97 in expenditures, including both cash spending and in-kind expenditures.
Among the expenses in that period were $750 for website design and development, $227.33 for business cards and posters, $205.70 for 1,000 palm cards, $167.52 for 1,000 door hangers and $119.81 for 500 children's coloring sheets designed as "favorite park" ballots.
The campaign also reported $60.78 for coffee at a campaign event at Exurb Fitness, along with numerous processing fees paid to Donorbox.
Earlier in the year, O'Brien's campaign reported a $1,790.10 expenditure at The Auld Shebeen for a campaign kickoff event, venue rental, food and service tip.
Another $1,669.50 was spent on yard signs in early July.
The campaign had $425.66 in cash on hand as of Aug. 31 and reported no outstanding loans or unpaid debts.
The committee's election-cycle receipts totaled $8,422.21, which is $5 higher than the campaign's contribution total because the first-quarter report included a $5 rebate. Patch excluded that rebate from the fundraising total.
O'Brien's campaign finance reports show she had raised:
| Reporting Period | Contributions |
|---|---|
| Jan. 2-March 31 | $810 |
| April 1-June 30 | $4,340.35 |
| July 1-23 | $361.82 |
