FAIRFAX, VA — A Fairfax Chinese restaurant known for family-style dishes, spicy specialties, and famous scallion bubble pancakes earned a spot on Eater DC's latest list of the 38 best restaurants in the Washington area.Eater recognized
Mama Chang, located at 3251 Blenheim Blvd. in Fairfax City, in its fall 2026 list, published Thursday.
The restaurant, which opened in 2019, is part of acclaimed chef Peter Chang's growing collection of Chinese eateries. Unlike some of his other restaurants, Mama Chang focuses on home-style cooking inspired by the women in his family, particularly his wife, Lisa, and daughter, Lydia.
Eater highlighted the restaurant's combination of Sichuan and Hunan cooking techniques, vegetable-focused dishes, dim sum and family-style meals. The menu draws inspiration from Chang's childhood in China's Hubei province and his family's cooking traditions.
The publication singled out Mama Chang's scallion bubble pancakes as its must-try dish. Other specialties include dry-fried cauliflower, spicy flounder and hot-and-numbing beef served in a stone pot.
Eater also noted the restaurant's spacious dining room, filled with plants and warm wood accents.
Mama Chang serves lunch and dinner and falls into Eater's moderate price category, designated by two dollar signs.
The restaurant is one of several ventures from Chang, a former Chinese Embassy chef whose restaurant portfolio has expanded throughout Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C.
His growing Northern Virginia presence includes restaurants in Herndon and Arlington's National Landing neighborhood, with another location planned for Alexandria, according to Eater.
Eater DC's "38 Best Restaurants Around D.C." is a quarterly guide that highlights restaurants its editors consider essential to the region's dining scene.
The list is compiled through restaurant visits and conversations with industry insiders, with selections representing a variety of cuisines, neighborhoods and price points.
The fall 2026 update adds two restaurants: Rye Bunny, a casual comfort-food spot in Adams Morgan, and Isla, a Caribbean-inspired restaurant in downtown Washington.
The latest edition removed two restaurants, Elmina and L'Avant-Garde.
Other Northern Virginia restaurants on the list include SER Restaurant, a Spanish eatery in Arlington's Ballston neighborhood. Maryland selections include J. Hollinger's Waterman's Chophouse in Silver Spring and Aventino Cucina in Bethesda.
The latest edition also includes expanded descriptions and price estimates to help diners choose restaurants based on their budgets and preferences.
