FAIRFAX, VA — Families in Fairfax will help make Halloween special for 100 local children Saturday by creating handmade costumes for students who might otherwise go without one.
The nonprofit Kids Give Back will host its sixth annual Costumes for Kids Fall Volunteer Festival on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, located at 8922 Little River Turnpike in Fairfax.
Children and their caregivers will work together to make 100 no-sew Halloween costumes for students at Woodburn, Timber Lane and London Towne elementary schools, Pimmit Hills Education Center and Wesley Housing in Alexandria.
The costumes will feature popular characters, including Supergirl, Spider-Man, Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and Woody from "Toy Story."
"Children deserve to celebrate Halloween with a costume they are excited to wear," said Denise Gavilan, founder and executive director of Kids Give Back.
In addition to costume-making, the family-friendly festival will feature face painting, crafts, food and other activities.
Kids Give Back, founded by a local parent, provides volunteer opportunities for children ages 6 to 12. The organization hosts family-friendly service events twice a year to encourage children and their caregivers to give back to their communities.
