FAIRFAX, VA — Fairfax County police partnered with the Drug Enforcement Administration and other county agencies Saturday for the 31st National Drug Take Back Day, collecting more than 1,071 pounds of expired or unused medication.

The program helps residents dispose of unwanted medications while reducing the environmental impact of flushing them or throwing them away. It also aims to prevent accidental poisoning, overdoses and prescription drug misuse.

Experts have warned that many teenagers begin using drugs by misusing prescription medications found in their homes or those of friends and family members. Removing unused medications can help prevent that misuse.

According to police, the Reston drop off site received the most medication, totaling 339 pounds, followed by West Springfield with 251 pounds. The Sully, Mount Vernon, McLean, Mason, Franconia and Fair Oaks districts also participated.

Residents who missed the event can dispose of unwanted medications year-round at secure collection boxes at all eight district police stations, or at participating pharmacies.

The police station collection boxes accept prescription drugs and ointments, over-the-counter medications, and pet medications. They do not accept illegal drugs, needles, nonprescription ointments or lotions, liquids, aerosol cans or inhalers.
