16-Year-Old Runaway Involved In High-Speed Pursuit On Friday: Police

A 16-year-old runaway from Chesterfield led a Stafford County sheriff's deputy on a high-speed chase Friday night on Kings Highway.

FREDERICKSBURG, VA — A 16-year-old girl identified as a possible runaway from Chesterfield County is facing multiple charges, including hit and run, in connection with a high speed pursuit on Friday night that ended in Fredericksburg with a crash.

1st Sgt. A.I. Assur was traveling on Kings Highway near Sherwood Forest Farm lane around 11:39 p.m., when he spotted a Toyota RAV4 traveling 91 mph in a 55 mph zone. Although Assur activated his emergency equipment to initiate a traffic stop, RAV4 accelerated and the high-speed pursuit began.

As the RAV4 continued to gain speed, the driver turned off the vehicle's lights and exited on the ramp toward Fredericksburg, nearly losing control of the car, according to police.

Assur notified both the Virginia State Police and Fredericksburg Police Department of the situation. As the pursuit continued on Kings Highway, the RAV4 driver drove on the shoulder to passed other vehicles, according to police.

At one intersection, the RAV4 ran a red light and nearly struck another vehicle. But at the intersection of Woodlyn Drive, the driver did hit another vehicle. Damaged, the RAV4 continued another 75 yards before coming to a stop and the pursuit ended., according to police.

The driver, whom police identified as a 16-year-old girl, surrendered to Assur, who later learned that the Chesterfield Police were in the process of reporting her as a runaway.

Assur obtained criminal complaints for felony eluding and reckless driving against the driver, who was held at the Juvenile Detention Center. Virginia State Police is expected to file additional charges in connection with the hit and run, according to SCSO.
