2-Year-Old Fired Gunshot Into Stafford Apartment, Interrupting Family's Dinner: Police

A 2-year-old fired a gunshot into a neighboring apartment in Stafford County on Thursday. Police said an adult faces child cruelty charges.

STAFFORD COUNTY, VA — A 2-year-old with a gun fired a shot into a neighboring apartment in Stafford County on Thursday evening, according to the Stafford County Sheriff's Office.

Nobody was injured in the shooting, police said in a report.

A 20-year-old man, who police identified as Delonte Harris, was arrested. He is charged with felony child cruelty and allowing access to a firearm to a child. If convicted of both charges, Harris could face up to six years in prison, based on Virginia's sentencing guidelines.

Harris was held at the Rappahannock Regional Jail on a $2,500 bond, authorities said.

The shooting occurred around 6:30 p.m. on Thursday at an apartment building in Fern Oaks Circle in Stafford County. A family told deputies that they were having dinner in their apartment when they heard a gunshot and a bullet came through the ceiling and landed in their hallway.

Deputies determined that the gunshot came from the apartment above the family. The deputies said a 2-year-old child in the upstairs apartment found a gun and fired it into the floor.

Harris was taken into custody after the investigation.

The Stafford County Sheriff's Office offers free gun locks to residents. To receive a free gun lock, residents can call the sheriff's office crime prevention unit at 540-658-4030.
