Country Cookin: If a big Southern feast is more your style, check out Country Cookin at either 3400 Plank Road or 1201 Jefferson Davis Highway. Country Cookin’s chicken fried steak slathered in black pepper gravy will make you forget all about that dried up white meat. Note: The restaurant is open only until 4 p.m. Thanksgiving day.
Ruby Tuesday: A burger joint for Thanksgiving? Of course! Ruby Tuesday, at either 2951 Plank Road or 4714 Mine Road, doesn’t have a Thanksgiving menu but don’t let that deter you. The restaurant offers several delicious alternatives such as a steak covered in asiago cheese and peppercorns, grilled chicken with mushrooms and artichokes in a parmesan cream sauce and a crab-cake dinner. If you really can’t imagine Thanksgiving without turkey, there’s always the turkey burger.
Denny’s: This hotcake hotspot, at 5325 Jefferson Davis Highway, isn’t just open for breakfast on Thanksgiving, although it does offer a delicious stack of pumpkin pancakes. Thanksgiving diners can enjoy a plate of traditional holiday turkey, sides and dressing or switch it up with the Hot Turkey Dipper, which is basically Thanksgiving between two pieces of bread and served with a side of gravy dipping sauce.
Golden Corral: A buffet is best for those who always go back for seconds, or thirds. Not only is Golden Corral buffet, 10320 Spotsylvania Ave., open, but it’s also offering a special Thanksgiving Day price. You and all of your family members coming in from out-of-town can stuff yourselves and then get dessert for just $12.99 each.
The Bavarian Chef: If some in your party want to ditch the traditional Thanksgiving menu completely and others can’t live without their turkey, try out The Bavarian Chef in the historic train station at 200 Lafayette Boulevard. You can go for the traditional Thanksgiving meal, made special for the holiday, or step out of the box and try flavorful Bavarian stews, breaded veal and pork tenderloins in a strawberry, honey, gin sauce. Call for reservations at 540-656-2101.
