76-Year-Old Woman Dies After Route 1 Crash After Driver Has Medical Emergency: Police
A 76-year-old passenger died after a crash on Route 1 in Stafford on Monday. Police said the driver suffered a medical emergency.
STAFFORD COUNTY, VA — A 76-year-old woman died Monday after a crash on Route 1 in Stafford County, the Stafford County Sheriff's Office said.
Police said the crash occurred when the driver suffered a medical emergency behind the wheel.
Police identified the woman as Wilma Comuntzis, a Stafford resident. The sheriff's office said she died at the hospital as a result of her injuries.

The driver, who police only identified as a 52-year-old man, also suffered serious injuries. An ambulance took him to a hospital for treatment. Authorities did not specify the nature of his injuries.
The crash occurred around 10:40 a.m. Monday on U.S. Route 1 near M&M Auto Parts.

Investigators said the driver of a 2009 Dodge Journey suffered a medical emergency, which caused the SUV to leave the roadway and hit a tree.
Deputies found Comuntzis unresponsive in the front passenger seat, according to the police report. Deputies and bystanders performed CPR until rescue personnel arrived.
Northbound U.S. Route 1 was shut down for an extended period of time on Monday as police responded to the scene.
The Stafford County Sheriff's Office is still investigating the crash.
