FREDERICKSBURG, VA — Voters in the City of Fredericksburg overwhelmingly supported a constitutional amendment Tuesday that would grant the Virginia General Assembly temporary authority to redraw the state’s congressional districts.
According to unofficial results from the Virginia Department of Elections, 1,575,288 (51.45%) people across the state voted "yes" compared to 1,486,225 (48.55%) who voted "no."
The measure, which appeared on a special election ballot, passed easily within the city limits with 65.83 percent of the vote. Final unofficial tallies in Fredericksburg showed 5,605 "yes" votes compared to 2,909 (34.17%) "no" votes.
The local support stood in contrast to neighboring jurisdictions, where the measure failed to gain a majority.
In Stafford County, voters narrowly rejected the amendment with 50.46% (28,113 votes) casting "no" ballots compared to 49.54% (27,605 votes) in favor.
Opposition was more pronounced in Spotsylvania County, where 55.14% of voters (29,986 votes) rejected the measure, while 44.86% (24,399 votes) voted "yes."
The approved amendment allows the General Assembly to adopt new congressional maps before the 2030 census to "restore fairness" in upcoming elections. The standard redistricting process is scheduled to resume for all future redistricting after the 2030 census.
Support for the amendment was consistent across all five Fredericksburg precincts, with the highest margin of victory appearing in the FCPS Administration precinct.

With the amendment’s certification, the General Assembly is now authorized to move forward with the redistricting process. Proponents argue this temporary measure allows Virginia to remain competitive and ensures legislative control over representation, while critics continue to voice concerns over the return to a system they claim favors political incumbents.
With the redrawn map, Fredericksburg City will be located in the 1st Congressional District.

Results remain unofficial until certified by the State Board of Elections.
