FREDERICKSBURG, VA — Motorists in Spotsylvania will face overnight changes next week at the Interstate 95 interchange at exit 126, where the southbound on-ramp from Route 1 is scheduled to close for construction.
The closure is set for Monday, April 27, through Wednesday, April 29, from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. each night in the Fredericksburg area. During those hours, Route 1 travelers seeking access to I-95 southbound will be detoured to I-95 northbound and directed to use the exit 130, Route 3, loop ramps to merge onto I-95 southbound.
Drivers also can use another interchange to reach I-95 southbound, including exit 118 at Thornburg or exit 130 at Route 3, according to the information released about the work. The I-95 southbound off-ramp at exit 126 will remain open during the overnight closure.
The ramp closure is tied to a $42 million project now underway to improve the exit 126 interchange in Spotsylvania. The work includes adding an I-95 northbound auxiliary lane near exit 126, widening Route 1 to add a second left-turn lane onto I-95 northbound and southbound, and widening the I-95 on-ramps at the intersection.
The project also includes building two noise barriers along I-95 southbound. Construction is scheduled to be complete in September 2027.
Travelers can check 511Virginia for updates on the ramp closure, traffic conditions, incidents, work zones and traffic cameras. Information is also available by calling 511 in Virginia, using the 511Virginia mobile app for Apple and Android devices, or visiting 511.vdot.virginia.gov.
The work affects one of the main access points between Route 1 and I-95 in Spotsylvania, and overnight drivers may want to plan extra time or use another interchange while the ramp is closed.
