5 Dead, 34 Hospitalized After I-95 Crash In Stafford County

STAFFORD COUNTY, VA — Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal multi-vehicle crash that happened about 2:35 a.m. on Interstate 95 southbound at the 146-mile marker in Stafford County.

According to police, traffic was slowing in the southbound lanes for an upcoming work zone when a bus failed to slow for traffic and struck six vehicles. The crash happened on the interstate in Stafford County, a heavily traveled stretch of I-95 used by residents and regional commuters.

Police reported that five people in the vehicles struck by the bus were killed. Police also reported that 34 people were taken to area hospitals. Of those 34, three had critical injuries, according to Virginia State Police.

The agency did not release the identities of those killed or injured. No additional details about the bus or the other vehicles involved were immediately available.

For Stafford County residents, the crash affected a major interstate corridor that runs through the county and is often congested, especially near work zones and during overnight and early morning travel.

On I-95 at mile marker 146.6 in Stafford County, motorists can expect major delays and extended closure due to a multi-vehicle crash. All south lanes are closed. Traffic backups are approximately 8.5 miles. Traffic detours to southbound Route 1 and can re-enter I-95 southbound at exit 143 (Aquia/Garrisonville).

VDOT recommends that through travelers may consider taking one of the other north-south routes in Virginia to avoid delays, including Route 301 or Route 29.
