All Lanes Of I-95 South Reopen; 5 Dead, 34 Hospitalized After Crash In Stafford County

STAFFORD COUNTY, VA — Virginia Department of Transportation reported just before 12 noon that all southbound lanes of I-95 at had reopened to traffic, following a fatal multi-vehicle crash.

The crash occurred about 2:35 a.m. near the 146-mile marker in Stafford County, according to Virginia State Police. Traffic was slowing in the southbound lanes for an upcoming work zone when a bus failed to slow for traffic and struck six vehicles. The crash happened on the interstate in a heavily traveled stretch of I-95 used by residents and regional commuters.

Police reported that five people in the vehicles struck by the bus were killed. Police also reported that 34 people were taken to area hospitals. Of those 34, three had critical injuries, according to Virginia State Police.

The agency did not release the identities of those killed or injured. No additional details about the bus or the other vehicles involved were immediately available.

For Stafford County residents, the crash affected a major interstate corridor that runs through the county and is often congested, especially near work zones and during overnight and early morning travel.
