FREDERICKSBURG, VA — The Fredericksburg Nationals clinched the Carolina League North first-half title Sunday with an 8-6 win over the Hill City Howlers, according to the team.
Fredericksburg took control early at Virginia Credit Union Stadium. Eli Willits walked to start the bottom of the first inning, stole second and scored on a Luke Dickerson RBI double, the team says. Coy James followed with a single that brought in Dickerson, and Jacob Walsh added an RBI to give the FredNats a 3-0 lead after one inning.
Willits scored a first-inning run in three of the six games in the series, according to the team.
The FredNats added another run in the third inning when James drove in Dickerson for his 40th RBI of the season. In the fourth, Gavin Fien hit a two-run double to left-center field, extending Fredericksburg’s lead to 6-1.
Carson Fischer started on the mound for Fredericksburg and faced just one batter over the minimum through three innings. Hill City scored once in the fourth, then added three runs in the fifth, including two on a Cannon Peebles RBI double, Fischer entered the game having allowed seven earned runs all season, according to the team.
Fredericksburg answered in the sixth inning when Fien drove in Nick Peoples with an infield RBI single, making it 8-6.
The first half of the season still has nine games remaining, according to the team. The FredNats are also chasing the franchise first-half wins record of 45, held by the Alexandria Dukes.
Fredericksburg will begin a road series Tuesday against the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers at Atrium Health Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
