Route 1 Reopens After Stafford Package Investigation

STAFFORD, VA — Richmond Highway (U.S. Route 1) has reopened after authorities determined a suspicious package that prompted evacuations and road closures near Joy of Living Water Church in Stafford County did not pose a threat to the community.

The Stafford County Sheriff's Office initially reported at 11:16 a.m. Tuesday that deputies were investigating a suspicious package at Joy of Living Water Church on Richmond Highway. The immediate area around the church was evacuated as a precaution.

As the investigation unfolded, the Sheriff's Office closed Route 1 between Tracey Street and Merryview Drive, with traffic detoured via Telegraph Road. The Virginia Department of Transportation also reported that all northbound and southbound lanes of U.S. Route 1 near Telegraph Road (Route 637) were closed because of the police activity.

Later Tuesday afternoon, the Sheriff's Office announced that investigators, working with the appropriate authorities, had thoroughly examined the suspicious package and determined it posed no threat.

"The suspicious package has been contained and there is no threat to the community at this time," the Sheriff's Office said in an update posted on social media. "Route 1 has been reopened."

Investigation Continues

Although the package was determined to be harmless, the Sheriff's Office said the investigation remains active as deputies work to determine more information about the incident.

Officials thanked residents for their patience during the investigation.
