FREDERICKSBURG, VA — A bus route that helps transport commuters to downtown Fredericksburg will soon be no more in a few weeks.
Fredericksburg Regional Transit will discontinue its Idlewild VRE bus route Nov. 23 following City Council approval on Oct. 13.
The route currently provides weekday service from the Idlewild neighborhood to the Virginia Railway Express station in downtown Fredericksburg.
According to a city news release, the route was needed historically due to limited parking at the station.
The route's downfall came with the opening of the Spotsylvania VRE station in 2015, which increased parking availability at the Fredericksburg station as ridership remained limited on the Idlewild bus route.

VRE connects Northern Virginia suburbs to Washington, D.C., along the Interstate 66 and Interstate 95 corridors and carries an average of 20,000 passengers daily, according to its website.
