FREDERICKSBURG, VA — Sarah Tyree-Herrmann, a senior at the University of Mary Washington, has been named a Newman Civic Fellow, the university announced Tuesday.

Recognized for helping classmates navigate the voting process, building homes with Habitat for Humanity and organizing volunteer projects, the Virginia Beach native joins a cohort of student leaders from 39 U.S. states, Washington, D.C., and Mexico.

"As soon as she arrived at UMW, Tyree-Herrmann put that commitment into practice, joining the Impact Program and exploring opportunities to volunteer and connect with the community," the announcement read. "Since then, she's taken leadership roles in all three of the University's major community engagement initiatives: Community Outreach and Resources, UMW Votes and Alternative Service Breaks."

The Newman Civic Fellowship is a yearlong program recognizing student leaders at Campus Compact member institutions. Named for Frank Newman, one of Campus Compact's founders, it includes the Annual Convening of Newman Civic Fellows, a three-day event featuring skill-building and networking. The fellowship also offers pathways to apply for mini-grants, scholarships and postgraduate opportunities.

"Now more than ever, it is an honor to recognize student leaders who are applying themselves as changemakers and creating positive impact in their communities," Campus Compact President Bobbie Laur said. "This is just the start of their lifelong journeys as Newman Civic Fellows, and I couldn't be more excited to watch them continue to grow and pursue their passions."
