The Germanna Community College Educational Foundation will honor Charles G. “Charlie” and Mary Wynn McDaniel with its 2013 Distinguished Person of the Year award on Feb. 15 at the Fredericksburg Country Club at 11021 Tidewater Trail. A 6 p.m. reception will be followed by dinner and the award presentation.
Bruce L. Davis, liaison to the president at Germanna, said, “Few can match the leadership of the McDaniels as job creators, historic preservationists and philanthropists.”
Mr. McDaniel is Chairman of The Hilldrup Companies, Inc.

A recurring theme in DPOY events has been one from the Frank Capra film “It’s a Wonderful Life”--that what matters in life is who we have been for and to each other.
Germanna President David A. Sam has said DPOY winners personify “the ideal of giving of oneself through leadership to a cause or calling larger than oneself.” He has said those chosen for the award are “a model for all of us.”
Speaking about 2011 DPOY winner Ed Allison, 2010 winner John Chichester capsulized the award concept: “Most every city, county and town are blessed with … one or two individuals who are always ready and willing to contribute to the betterment of their community, church, neighborhood or whatever may need a helping hand.”
The dinner is $75 per person and red and/or black attire is requested to compliment the event’s “Heart of the Community” theme.
