The sheriff's office had asked for assistance locating the infant's mother, and in their statement Thursday, the office praised the community response. "
We are incredibly thankful for the support and generosity shown by the Stafford County community," the office said. "We received numerous offers of donations for the infant, and our social media posts were shared more than 700 times. The compassion demonstrated by this community reflects the very best of Stafford County, and we are proud to serve the people who call it home."
The sheriff's office also pointed out the county's Safe Haven laws and locations where anyone in crisis can surrender an infant.
According to the sheriff, "In Stafford County, any fire station or hospital is a designated Safe Haven location where a parent may legally surrender an unharmed infant within 30 days of birth, with no questions asked and without fear of criminal repercussions."
The office encouraged anyone in crisis to take advantage of county resources.
