STAFFORD COUNTY, VA — Back-to-school planning has already begun in Stafford and Fredericksburg, with calendars available to help parents prepare for the first day in Stafford County Public Schools and Fredericksburg City Public Schools.

The first day of school for most students in Stafford County is Wednesday, Aug. 9. Most students in the City of Fredericksburg will return to classrooms on Tuesday, Aug. 8.

Both school systems are having a transition day immediately preceding the first day of school for students in kindergarten, sixth grade, and ninth grade. These transition days let students find their classrooms and meet their peers before all students return to the hallways.

Heading into the upcoming school year, some dates are subject to change. Here is the list of dates to know for this school year in Stafford County:

  • Tuesday, Aug. 8: Transition day for kindergarten, 6th grade, and 9th grade.
  • Wednesday, Aug. 9: First day of school for most students.
  • Friday, Sept. 1 through Monday, Sept. 4: Labor Day break, no school for students or staff.
  • Monday, Sept. 25: Yom Kippur holiday, no school for students or staff.
  • Friday, Oct. 6: Teacher workday, no school for students.
  • Monday, Oct. 9: Parent-teacher conferences, no school for students.
  • Tuesday, Nov. 7: Election Day, no school for students or staff.
  • Friday, Nov. 10: Veterans Day, no school for students or staff.
  • Wednesday, Nov. 22 through Friday, Nov. 24: Thanksgiving break, no school for students or staff.
  • Thursday, Dec. 21, 2023 through Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2024: Winter break, no school for students or staff. Faculty return to work on Jan. 3.
  • Monday, Jan. 15: Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, no school for students or staff
  • Friday, Feb. 16: Professional learning day, no school for students.
  • Monday, Feb. 19: Presidents' Day, no school for students or staff.
  • Friday, March 8: Teacher workday, no school for students.
  • Monday, March 11 through Friday, March 15: Spring break, no school for students or staff.
  • Friday, March 29: Good Friday, no school for students or staff.
  • Monday, April 1: Easter Monday, no school for students or staff.
  • Wednesday, April 10: Eid al-Fitr, no school for students or staff.
  • Friday, May 23: Last day of school.
