STAFFORD, VA—Two people have been arrested for cashing nearly $5,000 in bogus checks at an area convenience store, and one of them also faces grand larceny charges regarding stolen vehicles, the Stafford County Sheriff's Office announced Friday.
Matthew Philip Sullivan, 40, of Spotsylvania, was charged with obtaining money by false pretenses, grand larceny, conspiring to commit larceny and conspiracy. Jessica Rogers, 41, of Spotsylvania, was charged with issuing bad checks, conspiracy and conspiring to commit larceny.
Around 5 p.m. on July 23, police responded to a reported fraud in the Kwik Mart at 115 Onville Road, where the manager said Sullivan had come into the store several times and cashed checks that were returned for insufficient funds. The checks were in Rogers' name, and were used to buy drywall, paint, deck materials, concrete, shingles and other supplies, with a total of $4,854.93. When confronted by police, Sullivan admitted cashing the checks, knowing there were insufficient funds in the account.

Police also found Sullivan was behind the theft of several vehicles from a business where he used to work. He hired a towing company to remove several vehicles from the lot at 109 Deacon Road. The towing company later found out the vehicles didn't belong to Sullivan, and provided two receipts for two vehicles showing $390 paid to Sullivan. The owner of the lot said he hadn't sold or given away any of the vehicles that had been stolen.
