Bumbrey Brothers Lead James Monroe Past Culpeper County
Yellow Jackets score an early January win over the defending Battlefield District champs.
Brothers are inherently competitive. So there's no doubt, Julian and Jaamir Bumbrey, both starters on James Monroe's boys basketball team, carry this fraternal clash onto the hardwood. Friday night, they'll have to share the bragging rights as the duo each scored 20 points, while leading the Yellow Jackets to a 71-57 Battlefield District win over Culpeper County.
James Monroe head coach Antonio Coghill had words of praise for both players. "They played well," said Coghill. "In the first half, both of them shot a few three pointers. When they attack the basket, they're dangerous, because they can get to the line or they can finish."
James Monroe (8-1, 4-0 Battlefield) faced a determined Culpeper squad, who scrapped to stay in the game and found themselves down only one, 34-33, at halftime. The Blue Devils were led by sophomore Henry Butler, who chimed in with 17 points off the bench.

"We had a good start, but then they came back like a good team would," said Coghill. "In the second half, we played well and held on for the win."
After the break, the Yellow Jackets went on a run, leading by eight midway through the third quarter, and extending their advantage to 15 (63-48) halfway through the final stanza.

With just a little over a minute left and with the outcome already decided, James Monroe senior Kelvin Conway went up for a blocked shot, and flipped over the shooter landing headfirst on the court. After being attended to by the JM medical staff, he was helped to his feet and left the gymnasium under his own power.
The Yellow Jackets will travel to Courtland to take on the Cougars Tuesday, January 10.
