Bumpass Man Charged After Pursuit That Began On Princess Anne Street: Police

FREDERICKSBURG, VA — A 22-year-old Bumpass man was charged with multiple offenses after police said he fled a traffic stop following a disturbance on Princess Anne Street late Saturday night.

According to the Fredericksburg Police Department, officers responded at about 11:40 p.m. to the 1900 block of Princess Anne Street for a disturbance involving a group of intoxicated people engaged in a heated argument.

Two people walked toward a nearby vehicle as officers attempted to restore order, according to police. When the vehicle tried to leave the parking lot, the driver allegedly operated the vehicle recklessly and nearly struck several officers.

An officer attempted a traffic stop, but the driver refused to stop, according to police, leading officers on a pursuit that continued into Stafford County before ending near Butler Road.

Police identified the driver as Michael Brewbaker. Both Brewbaker and a passenger were detained without incident, police said.

According to police, officers recovered several empty alcohol containers and a firearm during a search of the vehicle.

Brewbaker is scheduled for hearings July 23 in Fredericksburg General District Court on multiple charges connected to the incident, including two counts of assault on a law enforcement officer, felony eluding, DUI, reckless driving and driving while suspended.

Police said Brewbaker was charged with:

• Two counts of assault on law enforcement under Virginia code 18.2-57(F)
• Felony eluding under Virginia code 46.2-817(F)
• Driving under the influence under Virginia code 18.2-266
• Reckless driving under Virginia code 46.2-864
• Reckless driving on private property under Virginia code 46.2-852
• Driving while suspended under Virginia code 46.2-302

The assault on law enforcement and eluding charges are Class 6 felonies. If Brewbaker is convictted on any of these three charges, he faces a possible sentence of one to five years in prison or, at the court's discretion, up to 12 months in jail and a fine of up to $2,500, under the Virginia Code.

Brewbaker was taken to the Rappahannock Regional Jail and held without bond. The passenger was released without charges.
