Coach Reaches 200th Win as Yellow Jackets Blast Knights
James Monroe girls' basketball improves to 8-2 on the season and will host Massaponax tomorrow.
Don't look now Coach K, but Julian Bumbrey is hot on your heels. In his 15th season at the helm, the James Monroe girls' basketball coach notched his 200th career win Tuesday, a 66-34 Battlefield District victory over Spotsylvania.
Bumbrey, whose two coaching stints with the Yellow Jackets span from 1992-6 and 2000-present, reflected on the accomplishment after the game.
"I've been around awhile," remarked Bumbrey. "I've had some good players come through and some good teams that have contributed to this. It's been a blessing."

Adding significance to the moment is the fact that his daughter, sophomore guard Danielle Bumbrey, helped make it happen.
And she's not the only Bumbrey offspring who's played a role. Bumbrey's older daughter Shylan, played for him as part of her illustrious high school career that culminated in her being named the Free Lance Star female athlete-of-the-year in 2005. His two sons, Jaamir and Julian, moonlight as hoops stars on the varsity boys' team when they're not racking up football titles.

"It's just a blessing, having my kids involved and doing some good things," said Bumbrey.
Tuesday, the outcome was never in doubt. James Monroe wasn't fully tested by a depleted Knights' squad missing standout Bria Carter for the season with a torn ACL. The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 37-18 halftime lead and cruised in the final two stanzas. Keyontae Williams led all scorers with 26 points and Brianne Stephenson chipped in with 14.
James Monroe (8-2) will host Massaponax tomorrow. The Jackets are 3-1 this season against group AAA opponents.
