Driver In Fatal Spotsylvania Car Crash Faces Manslaughter Charges

The driver in the single-vehicle Spotsylvania County crash was reportedly under the influence of alcohol at the time, reports say.

SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY, VA — The driver in a fatal single-vehicle June car crash was indicted by a county grand jury this month and is facing two counts of aggravated involuntary manslaughter, according to a report. Michael Edward Moriarty, 23, of Spotsylvania, was the driver in a June 22 crash on Brock Road near Orange Plank Road in which two people were killed.

Moriarty was traveling east on Brock Road when he ran off the roadway and struck a tree, the Free Lance-Star reported. Coaty James Thomson, 28, of Roanoke, and a 14-year-old juvenile were killed in the crash. Moriarty also suffered serious injuries in the crash.

Moriarty is reported to have been under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the crash. He also was charged with driving while intoxicated while transporting a child. If convicted, Moriarty faces a maximum of 20 years in prison for each manslaughter charge.
