Women's Soccer, Hockey Win, Men's Soccer Falters

UMW women's soccer and field hockey triumph in home contests, while men's Soccer falls at Lynchburg.

George, Jones Lead UMW Field Hockey Past Rhodes, 5-2

Junior midfielder Florence George and senior forward Morgan Jones each scored two goals to lead the University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 5-2 win over Rhodes College on Sunday at UMW. The Eagles, who improve to 4-0 on the season, also received a goal and an assist from sophomore Caitlin Baker.

George opened the scoring with 28 minutes remaining in the first half unassisted, and propelled UMW to a 3-0 halftime advantage after goals from Jones with 14 minutes remaining and another from George with seven minutes left.

Rhodes got on the scoreboard 13 minutes into the second half, but Jones answered less than four minutes later to return the margin to three, and Baker added her score less than four minutes after that to run the score to 5-1. The Lynx scored a late goal to cut the final to 5-2.

The Eagles led in shots, 21-15, with Rhodes holding a 10-7 advantage in corners, Junior Claire Gianelle had a career-high 11 saves for the Eagles, who will visit Roanoke College on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

Herrera, Carter Lead UMW Women's Soccer Past Alvernia, 2-0

Junior midfielder Excy Herrara scored in the third minute and sophomore Kelsey Carter added a goal and an assist to lead the University of Mary Washington women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Alvernia University on Sunday at the Battleground. UMW improves to 4-0 on the season.

The Eagles showed great pressure early, making several scoring chances, capped by Herrera, who recieved a cross from Carter and found the nets at 2:47. Both teams had several quality chances throughout the rest of the half, but the score remained 1-0 at intermission.

Carter found the nets for the second straight day at 63:05 on a pass from senior Amy Olson for an insurance score. Defensively, senior Tina Brehm made four big saves to preserve the shutout.

Mary Washington led in shots, 24-10, and had six corner kicks to three for the Crusaders.

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday when they host Randolph-Macon College at 4 p.m.

UMW Men's Soccer Falls at Lynchburg, 2-0

The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision at Lynchburg College on Sunday afternoon at the Shellenberger Classic. The Eagles, who fall to 2-2 on the season, saw sophomore Tommy Sangbouasy and freshman Jake Doyle named to the all-tournament team.

Lynchburg reached the scoreboard early, connecting on a goal from Mustapha Dumbuya at 8:05. The Hornets added an insurance score at 58:58 from Jordan Clark.

The Hornets held a 15-8 shot advantage, and had nine corner kicks to two for UMW. Blake Weiss had five saves in goal for the Eagles, who will visit Catholic University on Thursday at 4:00 p.m.
