#12 Eagles Improve to 5-0 With Win over Roanoke
Junior midfielder Lisa Charney scored three goals to lead the 12th ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 7-3 victory at Roanoke College on Wednesday afternoon in Salem, Va. The Eagles improve to 5-0 on the year.
For the fifth straight game, the Eagles fell behind, and for the fifth straight time, UMW bounced back in a big way offensively. Roanoke took the lead seven minutes into play, but the Eagles tied the score with 16 minutes remaining in the half on a Caitlin Baker goal. Charney followed with 15 minutes remaining to give UMW the lead for good, and Florence George added another goal just before halftime.
After Roanoke opened the second half with a score, Charney scored twice and senior Morgan Jones scored twice to up the advantage to 7-2. The Maroons added a late score to cut the final margin to 7-3.
UMW led in shots, 29-6, and in penalty corners, 16-2. Claire Gianelle had three saves for the Eagles.
Mary Washington will visit Wesley College on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. in the Capital Athletic Conference opener.

UMW Volleyball Opens up CAC Play with Sweep of Wesley
The University of Mary Washington volleyball team scored a 3-0 Capital Athletic Conference victory at Wesley College on Wednesday night in Dover, Del. Set scores were 25-15, 25-22, 25-19, as the Eagles improve to 6-1 on the season.
For the Eagles, Emily Shea had three service aces, Laura Gomez had seven kills, Ellen Smethurst added five kills, and Katie Shiflett had 28 assists.
Mary Washington will continue play at the Lebanon Valley Invitational this Friday and Saturday.

UMW Women Tie Randolph Macon, 2-2
The University of Mary Washington women's soccer team tied Randolph-Macon College, 2-2, on Wednesday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles move to 4-0-1 on the season.
UMW fell behind in the opening minutes, as Kim Roberts scored at 3:15. The Eagles answered at 8:08 when Tina Rader scored unassisted. Then, just 12 minutes into play, the Eagles scored the third goal of the game, by Erin Reynolds on an Amy Olson assist.
The game remained at 2-1 until 10 minutes remaining, when Mereith Eckles scored the tying tally. Randolph-Macon led in shots, 12-10, and had 11 corner kicks to four for UMW. Tina Brehm had one save and Charlotte Owens six for the Eagles.
Mary Washington will return to action on Sunday when they visit Frostburg State University at 1:30 p.m.
