Deena Applebury gains her 200th win and UMW Men remain undefeated in CAC play

#15 UMW Tops York, 59-42, for Applebury's 200th Win 

The 15th ranked University of Mary Washington saw thee players reach double figures en route to a 59-42 win over York College on Saturday in a battle of the last two undefeated teams in Capital Athletic Conference play. The win, which improves the Eagles' record to 12-0 overall and 5-0 in the league, was the 200th in the ten-year career of head coach Denna Applebury.

The Eagles opened up a 15-point halftime advantage, 35-20, using a 20-2 run to end the first stanza. Seniors Jenna McRae and Katie Wimmer each had six points in the run. The second half saw the Eagles have the lead trimmed to seven at 39-32, but bounced back with a 10-3 run and scored the final six points of the game.

UMW was led by McRae's 11 points, four rebounds, and four assists, while Wimmer added 10 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals. Junior center Carol Dye scored 10 points and added six rebounds, and freshman Aubrey Howland had six points and a game-high eight boards. York was led by April Sparkman's 12 points.

The Eagles shot 47% from the floor for the game, limiting York to 30%, and out-rebounded the Spartans, 40-23.

The win for Applebury was her 200th in her 246th career game, moving her career winning percentage to 81.3%, among the best in all of college basketball.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Monday when they host Lehman College at 2:00 p.m.

 

UMW Men's Basketball Tops York, 73-67, to Remain Undefeated in CAC Play

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team kept its conference record perfect Saturday by defeating York (Pa.) College 73-67.  The Eagles made 10 three-pointers and forced 25 Spartan turnovers, but committed 21 turnovers themselves, keeping York around for much of the second half of an ugly game at the William M. Anderson Center.

Senior guard Ryan Farrar led the Eagles with 16 points on 4-8 shooting from behind the arc. Senior forward Tad Dickman added 15 points and eight rebounds, including seven straight points during a stretch in the second half to help the Eagles pull away from a fiesty Spartan squad. Freshman Taylor Johnson rounded out the Eagles scoring in double figures with 10 points.

Forward Paul Kouvaris led the Spartans with 18 points and six rebounds, constantly finding his way to the foul line where he was 8-13 on the night. Guard Mo Oursler added 18 points on six three-pointers for York.

The Eagles trailed early but pulled ahead with a 9-1 run to close a sloppy first half that saw 33 turnovers between the two teams. Mary Washington stretched their lead to as much as 14 early in the second half before York could close to within one at the nine minute mark. The Eagles made their foul shots down the stretch to secure the win and improve their record to 5-0 in the Capital Athletic Conference and 10-4 overall. York fell to 2-3 in the CAC and 7-7 overall. 

Mary Washington will be in action again Wednesday as they visit St. Mary's College (Md.) in a match-up between the only two teams without a loss in CAC play. Tip-off will be at 8 PM.
